In the classic Mesopotamian epic poem Lugal-e, the Asag is characterized as a cosmic entity of pure calamity, sickness, and environmental devastation. It is so hideously repulsive and virulent that its mere presence causes rivers and lakes to instantly boil, killing fish and cooking them alive before it even strikes.
- Domain of Ruin: The demon lives in the underworld or the barren mountains, personifying the lowland farmer's dread of destructive floods, piercing head fevers, and unstoppable plagues.
- An Army of Rock: According to myth, the Asag mated with the mountains themselves to sire an unstoppable army of rock-demon offspring.
- The Divine Battle: The Asag's terror only ended when the heroic warrior god Ninurta confronted it in a brutal, days-long clash, ultimately destroying the monster with the help of Sharur, his enchanted talking mace.
